Despite rain falling on the village, people young and old were determined to help celebrate 850 years of a church on the site of Calverley Parish Church.

They enjoyed a host of attractions on the playing fields at Calverley Church of England Primary School, Town Gate.

Chrysalis, a music and theatre group from Buckinghamshire, kicked off the the event with a performance.

Group member Nicki Matthews said there had been a great response. "We use the performing arts to break down barriers and misconceptions about the church, playing songs from shows, pop music and cabaret."

Another favourite was Gof the clown, who entranced youngsters with his comedy and balloon modelling workshop.

The clown, who was taking time out from his day job as a vicar in Essex, said: "People are so friendlym and I have just learned how to speak Yorkshire."

Young visitors, including 11-yearold Francesca Rhodes from Woodhall, crowded round to meet three donkeys from the Elisabeth Svendsen

Trust for Children and Donkeys in Eccup.

The Trust provides riding therapy to children with special needs and disabilities, with more than 200 attending its centre every week.

This year's Rose Queen was Hannah Vernam who was selected through a vote by fellow pupils at Calverley C of E Primary.

The 11-year-old said she was thrilled to be chosen. "I was pleased. I was really shocked as I thought it was going to be someone else."

Other fun at the Carnival included a skipping display, a dance workshop and demonstrations by Transendance, arts and crafts, colourful face painting and a chance to hang on to the bucking bronco.

Organiser Michele Walker, wife of vicar the Rev John Walker, said the event was very successful. "I amjust so pleased because people

have seemed to come despite the weather. It's a chance to see those you would like to see a bit more often and to enjoy being a community."

The weekend of festivities was rounded off by an evening concert by Chrysalis and a special church service featuring the group and Gof the clown
