It will be lights, camera, action for a budding young film-maker from Leeds, whose talents will be showcased on the silver screen at a prestigious national film festival.t
Alfie Barker, 15, from Roundhay, will have his short film Assumption screened at the 2012 Co-operative Film Festival, being held in Manchester on November 1 and 2.
The entry was one of 66 chosen from almost 200 submitted by young film-makers, schools, youth groups, arts groups, colleges and video workshops from across the UK and Europe, including submissions from Belgium, the Czech Republic and Estonia.
The Roundhay High School pupil, who has already scooped six film awards during 2012, said: “My film is about a troubled teenager finding a way to unfetter his trouble and grief.
“The film is inspired by a film I watched at Leeds Young People’s Film Festival last year, called My First Movie, which is a documentary that showed film to young children in Afghanistan who had never seen it before.
“My inspiration was from a boy in the background throwing a paper aeroplane on the banks of a steep and dangerous valley. It was that moment when I almost starting imagining what this film would look like.”
The two-day event, at the AMC Cinema, Deansgate, Manchester, is being staged during ‘Co-operatives United’ – a week-long celebration as part of the global culmination of the United Nations International Year of Co-operatives.
The selected films, all under six minutes long, from young people aged 19 and under, will be shown over six screenings throughout the two-day festival.
Festival organiser Keela Walsh said: “This is a great opportunity for young film-makers to showcase their talents and means their short films could potentially be seen by a truly international audience.”
Free workshops at the festival will include animation, special effects make-up and podcast production. Screenings are free and entry is on the day on a first come, first served basis.
