Silver jubilee for Leeds Abbey Dash

THE Leeds Abbey Dash 2009 in aid of Age Concern and Help the Aged will take place in November.

Raising vital funds for disadvantaged older people in Yorkshire, the 10km road race is offering more than 6,000 places.

Now in it's 25th year, the event is suitable for fun runners and elite athletes alike.

The race is backed by the Yorkshire Evening Post and sponsored by Lucozade.

It has a super fast and flat course and offers the ideal route for runners looking to achieve their personal best running times.

Starting outside the Town Hall, participants will be able to enjoy picturesque views on the run, as they pass Kirkstall Abbey before heading to the finish line.

There will also be live bands along the route which creates a fun environment for all.

In preparation for the race, all competitors will be invited to join a fun warm up, in Victoria Gardens, on the morning of the event which was lead by Nell McAndrew last year.

Sarah Greene, events fundraiser at Age Concern and Help the Aged, said: "The Leeds Abbey Dash is the longest running 10K race in Leeds, and with a course record set in the over 55's category last year, we're really excited about the potential of this year's race.

"The Dash is a hugely successful event and is one of the most popular races in the calendar, and with places much sought after, we're urging people to sign up as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.

"This year we are appealing for all runners to raise a minimum of 35 each to help us reach our target of 200,000 which will help to make a real difference to the lives of disadvantaged older people in your region".

Local older people's projects in Yorkshire will once again benefit from monies raised from the Leeds Abbey Dash, including the funding of an Age Concern and Help the Aged HandyVan service in Leeds and West Yorkshire.

The HandyVan service fits security devices to help older people feel safer in their own homes.
