Shoplifter attacked security guard with a syringe

A shoplifter stabbed a security guard with a syringe as he tried to flee from a bargain store with a bottle of fabric softener.

Daniel Ungur, 29, was jailed for 12 months over the attack in the B&M Bargains store in Wakefield city centre.

Leeds Crown Court heard the unnamed security guard recognised Ungur as he was monitoring CCTV at the store on September 3 last year.

He then saw Ungur pick up a bottle of fabric softener and hide it under his clothes, the court was told.

The security guard then challenged him as he was about to leave the store and but Ungur refused to be searched and tried to flee fro the building.

The pair began to struggle and they both fell to the floor.

To his horror the security guard then felt a sharp scratch to his upper arm and recoiled in pain.

A member of the public went to help the injured security guard but Ungur also threatened that person with a syringe. He was heard to say: “I’ll stick you!”, the court was told.

Police were called and Ungur was arrested.

Carmel Pearson, prosecuting, said the security guard did not suffer serious injury from the wound but had to undergo tests for a month to see if had contracted HIV or hepatitis.

He has now been given the all clear.

Rob Casey, mitigating, said Ungur was extremely remorseful for what he had done.

He said his client had resorted to theft to feed his heroin addiction which has destroyed his life.

Mr Casey said Ungur had moved to West Yorkshire from Poland with his father. His father had returned to Poland and Ungur stayed as he had a job.

He began using heroin after losing that job and became isolated.

Jailing him, Judge James Spencer said: “The actual injury was perhaps superficial but the alarm and concern was significant because he had to undergo a series of tests.”
