Shoppers faced lengthy delays after a flock of sheep were spotted on a roundabout outside one of Leeds’ busiest retail parks.
At least 20 sheep were discovered in the centre of the roundabout at the Birstall Shopping Park, near junction 27 of the M62, on Saturday morning.
Police and Highways Agency officers closed off part of the roundabout, close to the Ikea superstore, causing lengthy traffic delays.
Bus passengers were reported to have faced waiting times of up to 40 minutes.
One motorist, who contacted the YEP, said that she couldn’t believe her eyes when she spotted the flock on the roundabout as she drove into Leeds.
She said: “I was driving to Leeds and noticed there was a big queue of traffic at the roundabout.
“There was a big line of traffic and I realised that there were lots of people taking photographs of sheep on the roundabout.
“I couldn’t believe my eyes. I have never seen anything like it .
“I had to look twice.”
“No one seems to know where they have come from.
“If they were from nearby rural land then they would have to have crossed busy roads and the motorway.”
The Yorkshire Evening Post understands that there were around seven police vehicles in attendance at the scene and officers guided the queuing traffic through one lane of the roundabout.
People took to Twitter over the weekend to speculate about where the flock may have come from.
