Shannon searcher on fraud charge

ONE of the leading players in the search for Dewsbury schoolgirl Shannon Matthews has been charged with benefit fraud.

Amanda Hyett, of Moorside Road, Dewsbury Moor, is alleged to have fraudulently claimed thousands of pounds in housing benefit and income support.

The 26-year-old is due to appear before Dewsbury Magistrates on July 29.

The YEP understands the alleged fraud was for a total of 43,000.

Hyett is the sister of Craig Meehan, Shannon's former stepdad. She made several media appearances during the 24 days Shannon was missing, took part in candlelit vigils and was a regular caller at the Matthews household.

Shannon was taken into care after being found hidden inside a bed at the Batley Carr flat rented by Michael Donovan, Meehan's uncle.

Donovan, and Shannon's mum, Karen, are both serving eight-year jail sentences after being convicted of offences linked to the girl's disappearance.
