Shadow minister impressed with city children's unit

BY Debbie Leigh CRIME and punishment were among the hot topics for a shadow minister kicking off a day in Leeds.

Andrew Mitchell, shadow minister for International Development, took part in a question and answer session with the management team at East Moor Secure Children's Unit, Adel, before touring the centre and meeting a few of the residents of the 36-bed home. It aims to rehabilitate boys aged 11 to 18 who have committed serious offences, mostly sexual or violent crimes, or robbery.

Mr Mitchell said: "I have been very impressed at the sense of order and discipline but also the creative approach they are taking here to try to make good citizens of people who have seriously fallen foul of the system."

Residents receive full-time education on site and staff address the youngsters' complex needs through a performance-related rewards scheme – good behaviour wins extra privileges and items for their rooms.

Mr Mitchell was in Leeds to support Julia Mulligan, prospective parliamentary candidate (PPC) for Leeds North West.

He was also meeting Neighbourhood Watch representatives in Calverley, visiting Airedale International air-conditioning business, Rawdon, and members of Yorkshire Cricket Club Under 16/17 Schools Academy Team.
