Senior councillors warn: 'Post Office bosses won't budge'
TWO senior Leeds councillors have hit out at stubborn post office bosses who are refusing to budge over the future of 22 Leeds branches threatened with closure.
Council officials recently met with senior Post Office Ltd managers to put forward suggestions about how the authority could help keep branches in the city open.
Ideas tabled included sharing accommodation or encouraging more people to use their local branch by allowing more council-run services to be transacted at the post office.
But Post Office managers insist only the upcoming national comprehensive review will identify which branches should stay.
Across the UK, 2,500 branches face the chop.
Coun Richard Brett, the current leader of the joint Lib Dem-Tory run Leeds City Council, said: “The talks with the Post Office were hugely frustrating – it simply won’t budge on the issue of closures.
Coun Andrew Carter, deputy leader of the council, added: “What is more annoying is (post office bosses’) admission that very little can be done to change its mind; this undermines public consultation.”
