The second annual Sky Ride Leeds will take place in the city on Sunday June 15.

Cyclists of all ages are urged to get involved and take in a traffic-free 5km loop around the city just weeks before the Tour de France arrives in Yorkshire on July 5 and 6.

The inaugural Sky Ride Leeds saw 8,500 riders cycle around the city last year. They were joined by popstar and Sky Ride ambassador Kimberley Walsh, Team Sky’s Ben Swift and CB cyclist Matt Crampton.

Similar cycling spectacles will take place in Sheffield on August 10, Hull on August 17, York on September 14 and Bradford on September 28.

Sky Ride ambassador Sir Chris Hoy said: “Sky Rides close towns and cities for big bike events so you can ride safely on traffic-free streets, with a huge festival atmosphere and loads to do both on and off the bike.

“They are great fun and a great way to get on your bike.”

SkyRide Leeds is a family-friendly event encouraging people of all ages and abilities to discover the fun and freedom of going out on a bike ride.

Last year’s event saw riders tackle a traffic-free loop around Leeds city centre. The main route was 5km-long but shorter rides of 500metres and 750metres were available for those less confident on two wheels.

A Leeds City Council spokesman said details of the event, which is organised in partnership with British Cycling and Sky, are likely to be announced next week.

The announcement comes as the cycling buzz continues to absorb Yorkshire.

The latest event to showcase the sport is the Cycle City Leeds Outdoor Expo, which will see over 20 exhibitors and interactive activities set out free for visitors to Victoria Gardens, outside Leeds Art Gallery, today from 10am to 7pm.

Cycling lessons, repairs programme Bike Doctor, police bike tagging, CityConnect and East Street Arts’ bike chariots will all have a presence at the expo.
