Scooter fans attacked on Otley carnival day

SCOOTER enthusiasts were seriously hurt when they were the victims of an unprovoked attack during a cancer charity fundraising day.

Four men – all members of the Gemini Club which organised the event – were seriously injured during the alleged assaults which broke out at the Yeoman pub in Gay Lane, Otley, shortly before 8.15pm last Saturday – the day of Otley Carnival.

Police believe that the incident started when a group of about 10 to 15 local men turned up at the charity event which involved scooter enthusiasts from across the region, including Leeds, Pudsey and Harrogate areas.

Officers were called to the pub after reports of a large number of men fighting in the rear car park.

Some of the four victims were with close relatives and children.

Two of the men, aged 37 and 46 and from Leeds, received serious injuries and all four hurt were taken to Leeds General Infirmary for treatment.

They have since been discharged.

Later it was discovered that a fifth Leeds man – aged 29 and not part of the scooter fraternity – had also suffered injuries during the fighting and had sought hospital treatment.

It is believed that the trouble followed a fight at another pub in the town which resulted in the scooter enthusiasts being wrongly targeted and pursued to the Yeoman by a group of local men.

Six men, aged between 18 and 40, have been arrested in connection with the incident and were subsequently released on police bail pending further enquiries.

Detectives are still keen to hear from anyone who saw the incident or anyone with any information.
