Schooling that's streets ahead

Pupils at John Smeaton Community College are benefiting from a new state-of-the-art learning environment. Click here for full story.

The new College at Stanks opened in September and is designed around the 'street' concept with teaching pods accessed from a spacious, central social area.

It also boasts recording, dance and drama studios, outdoor learning spaces and artificial pitches, multi-purpose games area, conference and community rooms and a Connexions office.

It has also been equipped with unique facilities designed around the need of local young people and communities.

These include a construction suite, a hair and beauty salon and an extensive learning support unit.

In addition the school has access to the sports facilities, including a 25m pool, at the newly refurbished 5.7m John Smeaton Leisure Centre next door.

The new building has been completed under phase two of the 112m Combined Secondary Schools Project, a partnership between Education Leeds, Leeds City Council and Land Securities Trillium.

The facilities are also widely available for community use with a certain number of hours given to local organisations free of charge.

Headteacher John Daulby said: "These are very exciting times at John Smeaton. Results are improving year on year and

we now have one of the best learning environments in the country to add to the brilliant leisure and sports facilities.

"This community deserves the very best and we are determined to use these new facilities to continue the fantastic progress we've made over the last few years."

Councillor Richard Harker, support executive member for children's services, said: "I am extremely proud that we are building some of the best facilities in the country here in Leeds.

"They will help thousands of children and young people to achieve their best and also provide learning and leisureopportunities for the entire community.

"We want the best for all our children and young people and will continue to explore any scheme to build even more world-class learning environments in Leeds."
