Schoolgirl tells of kidnap bid terror

A masked man tried to abduct an eight-year-old girl from the front garden of her home in Wakefield.

Police are investigating a claim that a man driving a white van attempted to snatch the youngster from outside an address in Streethouse.

The girl’s mother told the YEP her terrified daughter ran into the house screaming following the incident at around 7pm on Friday.

The mother, who does not want her child to be identified, told the YEP: “She said a man approached her, he had a balaclava on. She said he just held his hands out as though he was going to grab her so she screamed and ran in to the house. When she came in she was shaking.

“She just keeps looking out of the window, saying ‘he is going to get me.’ Normally on a Sunday she nags me to go out playing in the garden, but she doesn’t want to go out of the house any more.”

The mother added: “ As soon as I mention it to her she starts crying and she hasn’t slept properly since it happened.”

A West Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: “An eight-year-old girl was allegedly approached by a man in a white van. He walked towards her and threatened that he was going to get her. She ran inside the house and raised the alarm with her family.

“The suspect is described as a white man who was wearing a red jumper, black or grey trousers and black shoes.”

The spokeswoman added; “Police are visiting a local school to give reassurance.” Call police on 101, or Crimestoppers, in confidence, on 0800 555111.
