BUDDING musicians in Leeds are to be put through their paces at a summer school launched by a real life rocker.

Veteran musician Isaac Heywood has travelled the world for 20 years as a drummer for acts including Meatloaf, Leeds singer Corinne Bailey Rae and Nightmares on Wax.

He is the brains behind Rock School UK, which gets underway at the Rock and Roll Circus Studios in Armley, Leeds, on Monday.

Wannabe rock stars aged nine to 16 will be taking over the studios for six weeks.

Working alongside professional musicians, the youngsters will form bands, learn their favourite cover versions, write their own original music and then record it in an industry-standard studio.

Rock School UK graduates then showcase their bands at a finale gig at the Wardrobe in Leeds city centre, a top national music venue.

Isaac Heywood said: “In the space of each course, we see a huge transformation in the kids. Not only with their playing and performing ability, but with the confidence they all gain.

“As well as Rock School UK being educational and requiring a good work ethic, everyone makes new friends and it’s loads of fun.

“Because all Rock School UK courses are for both boys and girls, any instrument and any ability, all the children work with like minded people and at a comfortable pace.”

He added: “As a drummer, I have been lucky enough to have travelled the world and work with some amazing musicians.

“Through Rock School UK, mentoring and other teaching it is possible to pass on some first hand hints and tips to hopefully inspire up and coming musicians and bands.”

The 2014 summer academy, which repeats for six consecutive weeks, starts on Monday.

It runs from 10am to 4pm every weekday with the finale gig each Saturday.
