School room where Leeds teacher was fatally stabbed to be ‘remodelled’

THE school area in which a Leeds teacher was fatally stabbed is to be “remodelled” into a new learning space as staff and pupils try to make a “fresh start” in the new academic year.

Long-serving teacher Ann Maguire, 61, died following the incident at Corpus Christi Catholic College in Halton Moor in April as she taught a Spanish lesson.

The YEP has learned that the rooms and space within the vicinity of the incident will be divided into a new ICT room, work room and ‘speaking and listening’ room before the new term starts next month.

It is understood the new space is designed purely to help staff and pupils - who have helped draw up the plans - move on from the tragedy.

Nigel Richardson, Leeds City Council’s director of children’s services, told the YEP: “We continue to work closely with the school and the diocese and have agreed to fund remodelling work to part of the school building in order to help the school move on from the terrible tragedy which occurred earlier this year.

“It is very important that the staff and pupils are comfortable in their surroundings and are able to make a fresh start when they return to school next month.”

A report just approved by the council confirms that £120,000 of capital funding has been allocated to the project.

The report says the money is for “works at Corpus Christi Catholic College to remodel accommodation on the fourth floor of the school following an incident that occurred at the school in April this year, which resulted in the death of a teacher”. It adds: “The new accommodation is required by the start of the new term. There has been liaison with staff and pupils in the development of the proposed remodelling and this has also been done in partnership with the Catholic Diocese.”

Mrs Maguire, from Moortown, was fatally stabbed as she taught at Corpus Christi on April 28. She had taught at the school for more than 40 years and was due to retire in September.

A schoolboy aged 16 has accepted responsibility for her unlawful killing and is due to stand trial for murder in November.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Ann Maguire is to be held next month.

The service will take place at Leeds Town Hall on Monday, September 29, starting at midday.

Members of the public are encouraged to join invited guests to show their appreciation for mother-of-two Mrs Maguire’s long years of service at Corpus Christi Catholic College.

Mrs Maguire was due to retire in September.
