Scarf horror of Leeds kart woman

A 21-year-old was fighting for her life after she was throttled by her scarf in a go-karting accident.

The woman suffered severe neck injuries when the scarf got tangled up in an axle of a kart she was driving.

The woman, taking part in an unofficial karting session at a new car park at Guiseley near Leeds on Easter Monday, was taken by air ambulance to Leeds General Infirmary.

She had emergency surgery and was put on a life-support machine to help her breathe. Her condition is described as critical but stable.

Police are investigating but declined to comment on the details.

Tyre marks were clearly visible on the new tarmac surface at new car park on land next to the rail line off Netherfield Road.

It is believed that at least two karts were used by a group of people aged in their 20s.

It is understand that the woman's friends tried to free her from her twisted scarf.

The site of the car park is 100 yards from a karting centre at Gordon Mills. The YEP understands that the incident was in no way at all connected to their operation.

Police received a call at about 5pm on Monday. They arrived to find paramedics already trying to resuscitate the woman.

Jonathan Towers who was visiting a friend at his home opposite the car park, said he saw the ambulance helicopter. "It was there for about 10 minutes and there were ambulances, police and cars all over the scene."

Another neighbour said that the new car park had been left secure by the contractors, though youngsters with skateboards got in earlier that day.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has any information should contact Det Sgt Karen Milner at Weetwood Police Station via 0845 606 0606.

On September 14 1927 Edwardian dance star Isadora Duncan was killed when her scarf became trapped in the spokes of a Bugatti sports car.
