Good for Ryanair, they should be allowed to operate out of LBA. We have flown with Jet2 on 3 occasions and whilst we could not fault their service there prices were not one of the cheapest we have seen. And with more and more families now flying abroad for their holidays maybe a little bit of competition will be good for all concerned.

Jet2 boss Phillip Meeson is having a laugh when he talks about Jet2 as a low cost airline and the hidden extras in Ryanair's fares making them expensive.
Let me give you an example, flying to Alicante in August with Jet2, advertised fare 18.99 but then add 21.00 taxes, 9.99 for a bag, 6.99 to pre book a seat and 4.99 for using a credit card, total 61.87. Just with a seat and the credit card charge its 44.98. With Ryanair a flight to Alicante on the same day is advertised at 15.00 with a 5 pound charge for using a credit card, total 20.00. Guess which one I have booked?
This move by Ryanair to increase competition at the airport will see me saving money which I welcome

If Ryanair are as bad as Paddy suggests then I don't see why he is so concerned about their new proposed business at Leeds/ Bradford. If they are
so bad then obviously no one will want to fly with them anyway. However
Ryanair can't be as bad as all that, can they, as there seems to be no denying that they are a highly successful business on a national and international scale. A bit of competition between Ryanair and the other operators will surely be to everyones' benefit . The true competition has to be that with other airports, eg Manchester, not just inter- company between the Leeds/Bradford operators. On that basis it seems to me that an extra proven operator at Leeds is bound to create extra jobs and money flowing to Leeds and Yorkshire as well as helping to raise the profile of Leeds as a city of some importance. At the moment Leeds suffers from a lack of national awareness, losing out in jobs, infrastructure and investment to better publicised or politically fashionable places.
I have no interest or axe to grind on behalf of Ryanair or any other operator, but as one born and brought up in Leeds I am very supportive of the City and the welfare of it's people. Especially in this recession and the coming decade Leeds needs to grab every bit of business it can with the world outside Yorkshire if it is to move forward and not slowly sink into deeper obscurity. Any improvements to it's Airport and air services will reap returns worth far more than the costs, and deserve to be encouraged and well supported.

I am delighted to know that Ryanair is set to operate on a bigger scale from LBA. It is not fair that people in this region have to travel long journeys to get to destinations not on the LBA routes. Leeds being the capital city of Yorkshire should have the best airport .

Hi
Any competition is good competition and its about time Jet2 were given a run for their money at Leeds.
I've flown RyanAir once and you know what my partner said to me when I booked our last holiday?
Are we flying RyanAir again I enjoyed that.
We normally fly Jet2 from Leeds but for 60 for 4 people to Gerona last Febuary then who would you choose?.
I have vowed NEVER to fly with Jet2 ever again so the news of a Ryan base at Leeds Bradford, including the destinations I want to goto creates sheer joy in my mind of not having to resort to the monotony of Manchester
Thanks

Hello
I am just writing in response to your story regarding Ryanair's announcement that they are launching Leeds as there newest base.
They say they will base 2 aircraft at leeds and go in direct competition with Jet 2 on 8 existing routes.
They say that this will create 1000 new jobs? How?
I would like to see where these jobs would come from.
Ryanair are eliminating checkin desks and discouraging passengers from traveling with luggage, to become web only checkin, with hefty fines if you want to checkin with a person.. so no new staff there.
They don't use cleaning companies , the cabin crew do the cleaning in quick turn arounds of the aircraft , so no new staff there.
The crew and pilots would come from existing pools of staff so no new local staff there !
The only new staff maybe some extra ground handling/dispatch and maintenance (that is if maintenance happens in Leeds) .. but we are talking well under 100 jobs their .
And if this effects negatively Jet2 then we could be talking Yorkshire job losses of more than that !
More worryingly , Ryanair seem to have a habit of starting up routes in competition to other airlines only to the point at which the other airline cancels the route due to Ryanairs aggressive advertising and business practices , so called 1p fares ( before the 100's of pounds of extra fees .. check in luggage, food ect ect which in some cases make them more expensive than legacy carriers ) Then for Ryanair to then cancel the routes when airports dont reduce landing fees to what Michael oLeary wants . ( As in the Aer Arann , Dublin -cork route fiasco )
This whole situation just seems another bad turn for Leeds Bradford airport , after all the other parking charges, loss of the Gregs bakers there and many other bad changes to my local airport.
If you could also forward this to the webmaster Jeff Fox .
Thanks.

Had it been any other 'budget airline' I'd have been delighted but I will only travel Ryan Air if I really have no other option. Every time my family has travelled we have been frustrated at the baggage conditions, fees and attitude of the staff, making the whole thing utterly unpleasant. I'd rather all budget airlines indicated a more transparent price, but of them all, Ryan Air are the worst. I wouldn't recommend using them as a means to get on holiday because any pre-holiday optimism and excited is eroded the minute you use their service.
