Roundhay: Sylvia Wright visits St Andrew's Church

Charity pioneer Sylvia Wright visited St Andrew's United Reformed Church in Roundhay.

Following her investiture by the Queen at Buckingham Palace with an OBE for her work with deaf children in India, Sylvia attended a morning service at St Andrew's. She addressed the congregation.

"St Andrew's has supported the work of the Sylvia Wright Trust in India from the start," says former Sylvia Wright Trust chairman, John Faulkner, "And St Andrew's is Sylvia's largest consistent church supporter."

John Faulkner continues, "The Queen has honoured Sylvia for her work with deaf children in Tamil Nadu in southern India. It was twenty-five years ago that Sylvia, a nurse in Leeds, followed the teaching of Jesus and sold everything she had to go work with the poor in India.

In addition to the hospital, she set up a school for 230 profoundly deaf children. Previously, they would have received no education because of their disability. Now they can aim to go to higher education. Six have graduated from the University of Chennai. The Trust trains teachers in the skills required to teach deaf children. Its hospital is one of two designated centres in Tamil Nadu for training doctors in HIV/AIDS awareness."

David Pickering, minister at St Andrew's, said: "We are glad to support her work and pray for God's continuing blessings on Sylvia and her team in India and all the many people who benefit from their work."
