Roundhay Park: Date set for announcement of Mansion's new operator

The new commercial operator of Roundhay Park Mansion should be known by the end of the summer.

A decision is likely to be taken at a meeting of the city council's executive board on August 27, revealed Martin Farrington, acting chief recreation officer.

He told the Friends of Roundhay Park annual meeting that final bids to take over the catering should be submitted by June 27.

He said the council had offered to provide a "substantial" sum of money to the preferred operator to enable them to carry out internal improvements. Mr Farrington added that the closure date for bids had been flexible because he did not want to deter would-be operators.

More than 2m has already been spent on upgrading the Mansion, some of which has been underwritten by the projected sales of some Roundhay Park buildings.

The Friends of Roundhay Park were shocked to learn that a decision to sell Nos 1-7 Park Cottages and the listed Carriage House had been taken as long ago as March 2004.

They were not told.

Mr Farrington reported that bids for the Park Cottages were made by the end of May and were being evaluated.

He said a planning brief would now be drawn up before the Carriage House is disposed of.

This will set out the uses for which the council thinks the building is suitable.

The Friends passed a resolution calling for a stop to all the sales and an investigation of alternative uses.
