Roundhay Forum gets good support

So many Roundhay residents wanted to help protect their local environment that they queued up to volunteer! Click here for full details.

Roundhay Planning Forum is producing a Neighbourhood Design Statement - the first of its kind in Leeds which covers a whole ward.

And when a public consultation meeting was held at Kerr Mackie Primary School to getmore local people involved, 160 residents turned up and queued outside the doors.

More than 100 of them have agreed to work with the Forumon collating information for the Design Statement.

Forum chairman, Mike Fox, said: "I am overwhelmed by the level of support. It's superb and exceeded all our expectations. It demonstrates that the people of Roundhay do care about their environment.

"It's not just amatter of letting others do things for them - they are prepared to do things themselves. The people of Roundhay deserve praise for their commitment."

Mr Fox claimed that the Design Statement would be "a blueprint" forwards across the city, looking at the built environment, transport links, leisure facilities, the cultural environment and green spaces.

If accepted by the city council as a Supplementary Planning Document it will have to be taken into consideration when dealing with any planning applications.

Over 500 questionnaires on local people's concerns about the area have also been returned to the Forum and these are now being analysed.

"All sorts of messages are coming through and they will all formpart of the Design Statement," said Mr Fox.

"Some people are mentioning hot spots where antisocial behaviour has been detected and some of the younger people claim they have to go to Chapel Allerton for their social life.

"And, of course, there is growing concern about developers taking over residential properties and making them multi-occupancy."

A series of workshops would be held in November for further discussion on the issues, he added.
