Under a bridge-building scheme dubbed "Adopt-a-Cop" every one of the 16 primary schools in the Rothwell Neighbourhood Policing Team(NPT) area is to have its own two designated police officers or community support officers.

As well as making friends with pupils, the bobbies will be the direct contact point for teachers in dealing with problems such as truancy, anti-social behaviour on school grounds and other local issues which affect their schools, pupils and families.

The appointed officers have already made contact with their schools to ensure good links are built-up in time for the new half term.

Support

Sgt Paul Denison of the Rothwell Neighbourhood Policing Team said: "All our officers are available to support local schools should they need us."

"But by assigning two officers to each school, teachers, pupils and parents and the NPT will be able to benefit from regular face-to-face contact.

"The officers will also build-up a better knowledge of the schools and the individual issues which affect them, so the Adopt-a-Cop scheme can only be a good thing," said Sgt Denison.
