Legions of history-lovers can enjoy a blast from the past at Leeds City Museum’s new Roman-themed exhibit.

‘Roman Empire: Power and People’ features treasures from the British Museum’s collections, including Roman coins, sculptures, helmets, jewellery – and even a 1,800 year-old sock.

The 160-piece exhibition includes items from Yorkshire’s own collections and runs from September 20 to January 4.

Councillor Lucinda Yeadon, Leeds City Council’s executive member of digital and creative technologies, culture and skills, said: “This fascinating look at Roman life will showcase the important part that Yorkshire played in one of the biggest empires the world has ever seen.”

The museum is calling on the public to help re-name its Rory the Tiger mascot for the Roman-themed exhibit, by choosing either Rorius Maximus, Emperory Tigerius or Roman Rory and voting at www.facebook.com/leedsmuseumsandgalleries before August 8.
