A masked robber brandishing a hammer apologised to two shopkeepers for stealing their takings before making off with cash.

Now detectives are hunting the remorseful raider who threatened the couple at Ashley Road off-licence Stores, Harehills, Leeds, on Tuesday night.

The robber entered the shop at about 9.30pm shortly before the 60-year-old owner was due to close his premises for the night at 9.45pm.

He strode up to the counter of the shop and, wielding a wooden handled claw hammer, ordered the owner to “give me the money, give me the money.”

As the shopkeeper hesitated momentarily, to reinforce his demands the robber brought his hammer crashing down on the top of a freezer cabinet, shattering the glass.

At that point the owner’s wife came rushing through from the back and, fearing the raider might attack her husband, handed over a quantity of cash from the till.

After snatching hold of the money, the robber also hesitated and then said “I’m sorry” and ran from the shop.

Outside on the pavement he saw a man of much larger build a short distance away, looking towards him, but the raider ran in the opposite direction towards Back Cowper Terrace.

Last night the shopkeeper told the YEP they were very upset about the incident, adding: “We really don’t want to say what happened, it is upsetting.”

The robber was described as being an Asian or mixed race man aged between 25 and 30, 5ft 6in to 7in tall and of chubby build. He wore a dark hooded top with a dark Russian style cap with ear flaps and peak.

Today detectives from North East Leeds CID appealed to the man or anyone who saw him before or after the robbery or has any information to ring them at Stainbeck Police Station on the non-emergency number 101.
