ROADWORKS caused major delays in Leeds city centre after a tunnel had to be closed off to motorists.

The Woodhouse Lane tunnel on the inner ring road was closed from 6am on Friday, April 4.

Work is currently being carried out to try and strengthen the tunnel.

But most of the work is normally done throughout the night, until around 6am.

Yesterday, however, the YEP understands that a substation became flooded with water, meaning there was no power for the tunnel lights and it was closed off.

Traffic was backing up in all directions leading into the city as work on the underpass near the old Yorkshire Post building continued.

The road was not re-opened until a few hours later.

A spokesman for Leeds City Council said: “Work is currently underway to strengthen Woodhouse Tunnel.

“To ensure minimum disruption to motorists, this work is being carried out during the night and the tunnel re-opened by 6am each morning.

“Unfortunately, on Friday morning [April 4] a complication meant that the contractors could not re-open the tunnel as expected.

“We apologise for the disruption this caused.

“We do everything in our power to avoid this kind of issue however on this occasion it was beyond our control.”

There was more traffic disruption in Leeds this week as work was carried out on Scott Hall Road in the north Leeds area.

The YEP understands that these roadworks were being carried out by a utility company, and that they have now completed the necessary work.
