Road users in lorry quarry quandary
LORRY drivers are facing an uphill struggle and causing traffic problems if they continue to use a steep country road to get to a local quarry.
HGV drivers are using Black Hill Road to get to Arthington Quarry – despite warnings not to because they run into trouble.
Quarry owners Blackshaw Holdings Ltd has even had to charge vehicles to be towed in a bid to deter lorries from using the road when they have got stuck.
Coun Barry Anderson (Con, Adel and Wharfedale) is now working with Leeds City Council to try to improve the road.
He said: "The road is actually getting narrower and narrower because of the number and size of vehicles using it, as drivers are going into the sides to get past and wearing the road down.
"The quarry is doing its bit and is saying that by charging vehicles to tow them up the hill they're effectively fining them, but because it is a public road no one can actually stop HGV's using it.
"As for the satellite navigation equipment used by some of these vehicles, surely it can't be too hard to install equipment that warns drivers routes like this are an absolute no-no."
