Lucky Leeds shoppers could win £1,000 after Rhinos star Jamie Peacock helped to distribute 250 balloons for a hospital’s birthday.

The rugby hero joined staff from Nuffield Health Leeds Hospital to celebrate its 10th birthday yesterday, just days after winning the Super League Grand Final trophy.

Following a photocall on the steps of the Leeds city centre hospital, staff went out into the city to give 250 balloons to pedestrians, with each balloon carrying a unique code.

The 250 balloons were originally due to be released into the sky, but this plan was scrapped for environmental reasons and staff instead distributed the balloons to shoppers.

Those who received the balloons now have to register their codes on the Nuffield Health website to potentially win the £1,000 prize, with the winning code selected at random through a raffle.

Hospital director Andrew Thornton said: “We wanted all the staff, consultants and patients to celebrate 10 successful years of Nuffield Health Leeds Hospital and involve the people of Leeds in our celebrations with our £1,000 balloon prize.

“I would like to thank everyone who is involved with the hospital for their dedication and hard work and we are looking forward to another successful 10 years.”

The hospital kicked off the celebrations last Friday with an on-site party, which was attended by the Lord Mayor of Leeds, Coun Ann Castle.

Jamie Peacock joined yesterday’s balloon giveaway with his daughter Freya, one.

Nuffield Health Leeds Hospital opened on Leighton Street in October 2002 and is one of the leading private healthcare providers in Yorkshire.

The hospital was built to provide pioneering and complex surgery and is one of Europe’s most technologically advanced private hospitals, providing weight loss, cardiac, orthopaedic and paediatric procedures.

Anyone who received a balloon should register their details, along with the code, at www.nuffieldhealth.com/leeds10 to be in with a chance of winning the £1,000 prize.
