Review: Dave Gorman @ St George's Hall, Bradford
As someone unfamiliar with the work of this writer/adventurer/funnyman, I didn't know quite what to expect.
But even though I didn't appreciate quite what his forte was I could could sense that he was a little (just a little) ill at ease with doing a straight stand-up show.
For a start Gorman doesn't really do gags. Ok, he does the odd one here and there, but his humour is largely observational, sometimes abstract, at other times just plain adolescent – it's a great mix, but not one that instantly slots into a conventional 'stand-up' style of delivery.

Thankfully things warmed up after the interval. I won't give too much away, suffice to say that Gorman reverts more to type and is instantly transformed into the ebullient figure most people know him to be.

The first half was very much a gentle chuckling affair, while the second half saw a succession of belly-laughs - and you just know he's getting into his stride.

Much of his humour is based on very real, albeit utterly ephemeral, inspections of everyday life. For example, why is the catchphrase of kids cereal Coco Pops 'I'd RATHER have a bowl of Coco Pops'? You'd rather have a bowl of Coco Pops than what?!

Ok... you have to be there.
He also recalls a moment (we're pretty sure it's made up) when he called up the post office just to find out what would happen if he accidentally posted his door keys through a pillar box. The resulting chain of events was hilarious.
If it all sounds terribly obscure, random or childish then, well, you'd be right. But it works and, furthermore, at the heart of Gorman's humour is real hub of intelligence. Although many of his lines are flippant and plain silly you know they've originated from a great deal of serious pondering.
One of the key questions which came up time and time again was: what if? Frequently blurring the lines between the imagined and the real, to the point where the audience is left wondering whether all, some or none of what he is saying is true.
And I know what to expect next time: lots of laughs and some rather odd food for thought.
