Return of spending with happy ending
SHOPAHOLICS can start counting down the days to a glorious week when they can spend, spend, spend, and know their favourite pastime is helping a worthy cause.
The first ever Leeds Shopping Week was such a resounding success it is returning this year and organisers hope it will be even bigger and better second time round.
Last year's event featured eight days of makeovers, bargains, cocktails, canapes, exclusive viewings, prizes and glamorous fashion shows, raising almost 2,000 for a Leeds charity.
Now Leeds City Centre Retail Association (LCCRA), which has organised the event, is hoping the collection of activities from Thursday May 24 to Saturday June 2 will raise even more money this year for Leeds Women's Aid (LWA), which provides a refuge and outreach service for victims of domestic violence.
Rosie Robinson, director of LWA, said: "The women and children of Leeds Women's Aid are delighted that we have been chosen to be the Leeds Shopping Week charity again in 2007, especially as this year we are 35 years old.
"The money raised from last year's Shopping Week was spent on play equipment for the gardens of our safe houses and made a real difference. It was good for us to work with Leeds retailers, showing that we all care about the abuse of women and children."
A spokesperson for the event said this year's should be "even bigger and better".
Independent retailer Julie Lingard of Aqua Couture, in the upmarket Victoria Quarter, said Shopping Week was a great opportunity to showcase the talents of independent designers such as James Steward and Ryan Holliday Stevens.
Last year's event prompted the city's retailers to form the LCCRA, a partnership to represent large and small traders.
Researchers who crowned Leeds the UK's most female-friendly city last year said the quality of the city's stores and Shopping Week itself were important factors in their decision.
A recent survey for uSwitch found women in Leeds were among the biggest spenders in the country on fashion and personal grooming, with an average spend of 1,080.12 per woman per year.
