Retired after long innings at famous Leeds chippy

THE team behind iconic Headingley fish and chip takeaway and restaurant Bretts have retired from the battering crease after a lengthy innings.

Anne and Peter Scott have been serving up fish suppers to test match crowds and cricket legends for the past 15 years.

They declared at the end of a busy day yesterday after dozens of hungry spectators bowled up to the North Lane restaurant from the England V Sri Lanka game at Headingley.

Bretts, one of the oldest fish and chip shops in Leeds, opened in 1921 and has long been a favourite of some of cricket’s biggest names.

Legendary Yorkshire and England batsman Herbert Sutcliffe was a regular customer in the 1930s and 1940s.

And BBC cricket correspondent John Arlott liked Bretts so much he held his retirement party there.

Mrs Scott said Geoffrey Boycott is a regular customer and David Gower, Dickie Bird, and commentator Henry Blofeld have also tucked in to fish and chips at Bretts

However, it was a visit from an England batting great from the 1980s that sticks in Mrs Scott’s mind.

She said: “Three or four years ago Mike Gatting came in with a group of journalists. He ate two fish specials with chips, one after the other.

“I think he is renowned for having a reasonable appetite, but he did very well. That special is a jumbo sized fish. I’ve never seen anyone eat one after the other.”

Mrs Scott added: “Graeme Swann was in the other night and Michael Vaughn has been in. It’s usually the ones who are commentating, the players are too busy.

“We are also very busy when Leeds Rhinos are playing at home.”

But it is not just the famous names the Scotts will hold fond memories of.

Mrs Scott said: “The big thing I’m going to miss is the friendly customers. One couple came in and, after finding out we were leaving, the husband disappeared for five minutes and returned with a bunch of flowers.”

She added: “We just thought that the time was right to go after 15 years and do something new.”

Father and daughter business team Richard, 64, and Fiona Gibson, 35, are planning to take over running the restaurant from tomorrow.

The Gibson family run major shrink wrap producing business Marpak, which has two factories in Leeds.

Richard Gibson, 64, from Bramley, is a big cricket fan who has been watching matches at Headingley since he was a child.

Mr Gibson, who is a member of Yorkshire Cricket Taverners. said: “Cricket is very dear to me.”
