Refugee Week is ready to kick off in Leeds
THE contribution refugees make to UK life is to be celebrated at a special week of events in Leeds.
Starting tomorrow, Refugee Week will see Leeds stage activities ranging from poetry readings to an intercontinental five-a-side football tournament.
First held in 1997, the week also aims to raise awareness and understanding of the reasons people become refugees.
Victoria Long, who chairs Leeds Refugee Week, said: “It is about breaking down barriers, about bringing people in various communities together and finding out about their culture.”
Leeds has a long tradition of welcoming refugees, with Marks & Spencer and Burtons, both long-established Leeds-based companies, set up by refugees that settled in the city.
Refugee Week highlights include the visit to Leeds Metropolitan University by Amnesty International director Kate Allen, who will report on the detention of UK asylum seekers, and tomorrow’s launch event, in Victoria Gardens on The Headrow.
