Real ale lovers set for 2012 Leeds Beer, Cider and Perry Festival

Real ale connoisseurs in Leeds are preparing for their annual celebration of their favourite tipple - and they’ll have plenty to choose from.

Leeds Beer, Cider and Perry Festival takes place at Pudsey Civic Hall on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, March 15, 16 and 17.

Volunteers from Leeds Campaign for Real Ale will be staffing the pumps pulling more than 170 different real ales, plus dozens of ciders, perries and bottled brews from abroad.

The ales will include regular milds and bitters, strong ales, speciality beers, porters and stouts, and popular golden and pale ales.

Yorkshire brewers will be well represented, many producing one-off beers just for the festival.

Many brews will carry the “locale” stamp, meaning they were brewed with a 10 mile radius of the boundaries of Leeds.

The theme this year is Great Inventions, with beers named after some of the greatest.

The festival will be opened by councillor Alan Taylor, the 118th Lord Mayor of Leeds, in the company of Leeds author and beer expert Barrie Pepper at 11 am on the Thursday.

Features will include a “mild trail” with a wide range of mild beers, and a name the beer competition for a brew from a local brewery.

A global beer bar will offer the chance to drink beer from classic beer regions such as Germany, the United States and even Norway, plus wheat beers, fruit beers and some from Belgium which defy categorisation. Leeds CAMRA will again be supporting a charity. This year they have chosen Epilepsy Action. Pudsey Civic Hall is five minutes walk from Pudsey railway station.

The festival will be open from 11am to 3pm and 5pm to 11pm on the Thursday and Friday, and 11am to 4pm and 6pm to 11 pm on the Saturday.
