Radio 1 milestone for Leeds DJ Chris Moyles

HIS critics regularly deride him as all mouth and no talent.

But now Leeds-born DJ Chris Moyles is set to have the last laugh on his detractors when he enters the broadcasting record books.

Next week he will become the longest-serving host of BBC Radio 1's flagship breakfast show, taking the title from current holder Tony Blackburn.

Come Monday, Moyles will have clocked up a landmark 2,073 days at the helm of the show.

To celebrate that achievement, he is embarking on a nationwide tour that will include a visit to his home city.

The 35-year-old and the rest of his breakfast show gang are due to host a karaoke night complete with big band at the O2 Academy Leeds next Tuesday.

And staff at the venue are vowing to pull out all the stops to give Moyles the triumphant homecoming he deserves.

General manager Steve Hoyland said: "I think it's going to be a really special night.

"We're delighted to be playing our part in the celebrations."

Moyles grew up in Temple Newsam and started his broadcasting career at 14 as a Saturday afternoon DJ at Top Shop.

He went on to work for Radio Aire and had stints on Radio Luxembourg and London's Capital FM before joining Radio 1 in 1997.

Tony Blackburn presented the breakfast show from September 1967 to June 1973.

DOWN February 2006 - Moyles apologises after telling a caller her children were "f****** brats" live on air.

UP March 2009 - He helps raise more than 3m for Comic Relief by climbing Mount Kilimanjaro with a bunch of celebrity pals.
