Put best foot forward to help Headingley hospice

People are being urged to get involved in a sponsored walk to help raise money for Wheatfields Hospice.

Bernadette Goodall helped organise the Wheatfields Summer Walk last year when 25,000 was raised for the Headingley hospice, and she is hoping to attract as many walkers as possible for this year's event.

Mrs Goodall said: "I've been walking for Wheatfields for 20 years. Last year's walk was so successful, so I said 'let's do it again'."

She did her first walk for the hospice in 1983 and is hoping she can round up more than the 250 walkers she had last year.

Three different routes, all starting and finishing in Kettlewell, North Yorkshire, have been planned by Mrs Goodall and her walking group to accommodate everyone. The children's route is five miles, and there are two adult routes of 15 and 22 miles.

The routes will be patrolled by members of Raynet, the Radio Amateurs' Emergency Network, to help people with any problems they might have, including walking in the right direction.

Mike Garnett, PR manager of Wheatfields Hospice, said: "We have marshals and back-up cars. It is a very safe, well organised walk."

The Wheatfields Hospice is part of Sue Ryder Care and looks after people with life-threatening illnesses. It costs 2.1 million a year to keep it running, so fundraising events are vital.

Mr Garnett said: "We are very much dependent on the very good citizens of Leeds."

The walk takes place on June 7 and anyone interested in sponsoring or taking part should call Wheatfields Hospice on (0113) 2787249 or Bernadette Goodall (0113) 2575133.
