Pupils learn about potatoes at Great Yorkshire Showground

l

l

Hundreds of youngsters rolled up their sleeves at the Great Yorkshire Showground to gain an insight into the history of the humble spud.

Around 200 youngsters took part in a special workshop at the showground to learn more about the history of the potato.

Children also mucked in and discovered how to plant and nurture their own potatoes.

Imogen Butler and Zachary Wilson-Burrell, both aged 8, from Oatlands Junior School, in Harrogate, got into character and dressed as Queen Elizabeth I and Sir Walter Raleigh during the workshop.

Elizabethan explorer Sir Walter Raleigh was credited with bringing potatoes back to Britain following his expedition to America during the 16th century.
