Pudsey schoolboy snaps up photographic prize

SCHOOLBOY Luke Hudson scooped a top photography prize after capturing Leeds past and present in a single shot.

The 13-year-old Pudsey Crawshaw pupil snapped historic ironwork in the foreground of flats under construction at Granary Wharf.

The image won him first prize in the 2009 Colliers Green Focus photography competition.

Luke, from Rodley, beat competition from 300 children in nine schools.

Students were given digital cameras and encouraged to explore their environment. The best 45 pictures from an overall entry of 2,000 were shortlisted and the final four were selected by a judging panel including The Times Educational Supplement magazine editor and the director of the Photographers' Gallery.

Luke's prize was a digital camera for himself and one for his school.

Kelly Bolton, geography teacher at Crawshaw, said: "We are all thrilled for Luke that he has won, all the students thoroughly enjoyed being part of the programme. We have even received requests from other pupils about how they can be involved in a photographic workshop in the future."

Andrew Watt, head of the Leeds office of Colliers, said: "The winning photograph superbly illustrated the history and vision of Leeds in a single shot. This project is a great way for students to mix geographical skills with photography."
