Abbey Wanless, of Bradford Road, was told that she would have to pay around 2,000 towards treating her six-month-old son Blake, who has plagiocephaly - flat head syndrome.

The youngster will have to wear a special helmet to correct his skull by relieving the pressure on the brain and forcing the head to grow in a more natural shape.

However, Abbey, 19, and her partner Mark Devine, 26, were told that the NHS would not foot the bill as it was considered cosmetic surgery.

The couple have already had to pay 500 to have the helmet fitted and Abbey has had to take up a part-time cleaning job to help pay for Blake's treatment.

She said: "When Blake was born his head was mis-shapen but the hospital didn't tell me anything about it. The condition progressed and when Blake was three-months-old I took him to the doctors and they told me that it would sort itself out.

"It got worse when he was five-months-old and his ears started to stick out. We went to see a specialist in Leeds and we were told about the condition. It was a good job we found out when we did as Blake has a very severe case."

Abbey claimed that the NHS wouldn't pay for the special helmet and now she is looking for members of the community to come up with fundraising ideas.

She added: "We are now looking at fundraising to help pay for the

helmet and we would like to know if anyone out there will be able to help us.

"We have friends who are taking part in a sponsored walk and have got a few car boot sales planned but we are looking for some more ideas.

"I just want people to be aware that this kind of condition won't go away on its own because something needs to be done to correct it."

* If anyone has any fundraising ideas or wants to help raise money for Blake they can contact Abbey on 07926636599.
