Plans to build a £200m power plant at Kellingley Colliery will create dozens of new jobs, according to developers.
Peel Environmental hopes to submit a planning application to Wakefield Council early next year for the Southmoor Energy Centre – which would create 38 full time jobs and power 63,000 homes.

A public consultation meeting was held earlier this month at Knottingley Town Hall for residents to ask questions and find out about the project.
Richard Barker, development manager at Peel Environmental, said: “We have developed our proposals for Southmoor Energy Centre in close consultation with colliery management and UK Coal, and have already informed the staff on site. If built, our proposed energy centre will operate an efficient combined heat and power system, using waste as a fuel to release energy.
“It will use up to 280,000 tonnes per year of non-hazardous residual waste including industrial, commercial and possibly household from across the region, diverting it from landfill and producing renewable energy.”
“Our scheme will also make use of existing industrial land, its excellent transport links and an existing electrical grid infrastructure which will be able to accept an additional 26MW of power without the need for any upgrades.”
Residents can voice their opinions on the scheme as part of a local liaison committee, which will be set up to report back to Peel on public opinion of the project.
