Pop star Bieber held over drag racing under influence

TEENAGE heartthrob and singer Justin Bieber has appeared in court after being arrested for driving under the influence in an alleged drag race between a Lamborghini and a Ferrari in Florida.

The 19-year-old, who was said by police to have been drinking and smoking marijuana, was held by officers in Miami Beach and appeared via a video link from jail on charges of drag racing, driving under the influence, driving with an expired licence, and resisting arrest. The judge set his bail at $2,500 (£1,504) and he was released not long afterwards.

Miami Beach Chief of Police Raymond A Martinez said the star resisted arrest “without violence”, adding: “He did acknowledge that he did take a prescription medication and that he had been smoking marijuana and that he did consume a beer.”

Bieber was arrested after police saw two luxury cars racing at 4.09am local time on Thursday and Mr Martinez said officers “estimated he was going anywhere up to 55 to 60 miles an hour”.

A copy of the arrest report, published by the police, said Bieber swore at officers when he was stopped. The arresting officer said the singer had “bloodshot eyes” and added he could smell alcohol on his breath.

He added he asked Bieber to take his hands out of his pockets and the teenager replied: “I ain’t got no ******* weapons – why do you have to search me? What the **** is this about?”

Two vehicles had apparently been used to block off a residential area for the race, with Bieber in a yellow Lamborghini. R’n’B singer Khalil, the driver of a red Ferrari, was also arrested and appeared beside Bieber in court.

Bieber, who has amassed a fortune in his meteoric rise to fame, failed a field sobriety test and was taken to the Miami Beach police station for a breath test.

Video footage has been broadcast on TV apparently showing the Canadian megastar behind the wheel of his car being followed by fans shortly before the arrest.

Mr Martinez said the two cars “were starting from a stop position and they were accelerating up to a high rate of speed and going almost double the speed limit in that area”.

Last year, Bieber attracted criticism from fans after turning up late for UK concert performances, and provoked outrage after spitting from a hotel balcony in Toronto.
