Pontefract police officer’s ‘child cancer lie’
ACCUSED: Rachel Hewitt outside court in Hull. PIC: Ross Parry
A police officer has appeared in court on a misconduct charge after allegedly lying to bosses that her daughter had cancer.
Rachel Hewitt, 39, who lives in Pontefract and is an officer with North Yorkshire Police, is accused of telling her employers and colleagues that her daughter was receiving treatment for leukaemia.
Prosecuting at Hull Crown Court, Mark Kendall said Hewitt was facing a charge of misconduct in a public office and two fraud allegations.
Mr Kendall said Hewitt was charged with misleading her employers, North Yorkshire Police, after falsely claiming that her daughter had leukaemia over a period of approximately two years when she is accused with taking time off and a career break to allegedly care for her child, the court heard.
Mr Kendall added: “The essence of this is that initially for a period of approximately two years the defendant misled her employers, North Yorkshire Police, and colleagues, saying her daughter was suffering from leukaemia and receiving treatment.”
Hewitt, wearing glasses and dressed in black trousers with a beige shirt and black coat, spoke only to confirm her name and address during yesterday’s hearing.
She was granted bail and told by Judge Jeremy Richardson QC to return to Hull Crown Court for her next hearing on April 30.
