Pontefract: New super surgery gets planning nod

A new super surgery is to be built in South Kirkby after getting the nod from council planning chiefs.

The facility on Langthwaite Road will be home to two separate GP surgeries – Little Lane and Stockingate – alongside a pharmacy, a NHS dentist and community health services.

Community services currently provided at South Elmsall Health Centre will also move.

They will include podiatry, community dentist, sexual health, speech therapy, health visiting and district nursing.

Dr Douglas Diggle, of Little Lane Surgery, said: “We are absolutely thrilled with this news.

“Once it is built it will provide a great opportunity for all our patients to benefit from a new surgery in an absolutely delightful building.”

Dr Joseph Chandy, senior partner of Stockingate Surgery, added: “This is a very exciting time for the practice and we would like to say thank you to all our patients who have supported us through this process.

“Once the new surgery is open we are certain that this will make a significant impact on the wellbeing of our community.”

The new facility will serve an estimated 12,000 people and it is hoped it will mean less time on hospital waiting lists for patients.

Jonathan Molyneux, interim executive director of finance and efficiency for NHS Calderdale, Kirklees and Wakefield District cluster, said: “This is excellent news for the future of primary care services in the area and we’re grateful to all the local people who have contributed to the development of these plans.

“This state-of-the-art facility will provide a new home for the two existing GP practices.

“They will remain two separate GP surgeries with their own patient lists and names, but the move means they will be able to continue to provide the same high-quality care from modern, spacious premises.

“In addition to the GP practices, the building will also provide a variety of community services, allowing local people to access a range of health services without having to travel to different buildings.”

Approval for the new facility, which will be a two-storey building, was given earlier this month.
