Pontefract man’s world hip op record at 102
TRUE GRIT: Laurie Randall with granddaughter Gillian Coates.
True Yorkshire grit has put a Pontefract man on the verge of making it into the record books after having a hip replacement at the age of 102.
Laurie Randall could be about to go into the Guinness Book of World Records as the oldest person to have total hip replacement surgery.
Laurie had his left artificial hip, which he first had fitted back in 1989, replaced during a two-hour operation at Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield.
This week he made the trip back to Wakefield for his final post-op check at the hospital.
Laurie is now ahead of current Guinness world record holder Lily Wauters.
She had her right hip replaced in 2007 at the age of 101 years and 196 days.
His granddaughter Gillian Coates, of Durham, said it was Yorkshire grit that had seen Laurie bounce back from the op.
She said: “The operation was a fantastic success and we are very proud of him, he has true Yorkshire determination. I’m going to be informing Guinness world records about him.”
She added: “He has always said ‘I tell my legs what to do, they don’t tell me’.
“He wants to live until he is 105, but he said he didn’t want to do it if he was going to be in a wheelchair.”
Mr Randall also had his right hip replaced in 2006.
He lived at Western Avenue in Pontefract until his latest operation in November, but has now moved to Durham to be closer to his family.
Mr Randall thanked his neighbours Colin and Nancy Steele for helping him when he lived in Pontefract.
