Pontefract: Road closed after truck hits bridge

The incident scene.

A LORRY driver escaped unscathed after his truck struck a railway bridge in Pontefract.

The truck toppled over after hitting the bridge on Hardwick Road near the Carleton Hotel pub just before 10am on December 20.

Police closed the road for more than three hours while wreckage was cleared.

In August, worried resident Peter Cookson called for highways bosses to take action after a truck struck the same bridge.

Ian Thomson, Wakefield Council’s service director of planning and highways, said at the time that the road approaching the bridge was appropriately signposted to make people aware of the height restrictions.

Mr Thomson said lowering the road was not a viable option due to the reconstruction costs involved.
