Police probe over railings horror death of Leeds worker

SCENE OF TRAGEDY: The dead worker is believed to have been found by a colleague.

SCENE OF TRAGEDY: The dead worker is believed to have been found by a colleague.

A police investigation was launched after a worker was found dead, impaled by railings at a Leeds welding firm.

It is believed detectives suspect he was the victim of an accident when railings fell on his head.

Ambulance and fre crews, along with police, were called to Ashton Metal Fabrications (AMF) at the Ashton Road Light Industrial Estate, Harehills, Leeds, at noon on Saturday.

AMF specialises in manufacturing window grilles, railings and driveway gates.

It is understood that the man who died is aged in his 20s and may originate from Afghanistan. One report indicated that he had been working with a colleague on Saturday morning and the colleague had gone out to buy some lunch. When the man returned, he found his colleague beneath a section of metal railings, already dead from his injuries.

Though investigations continued yesterday it seemed likely that the death is likely to be classed as a non suspicious industrial accident and the matter referred to the Health and Safety Executive.

A post mortem examination was being held last night to establish the exact cause of the man’s death.

Yesterday though the main gates to the industrial estate were still open, Unit 5 – occupied by AMF –had blue and white police tape across its open entrance doors.

Sections of newly welded white gates and other metal units produced by the firm were stacked at the front.

The estate is operated by the Leeds Development Agency and is on one side of Ashton Road across from the Conways terrace streets.

One woman living nearby was shocked to hear of the tragedy, but said she had seen police, Fire Service and ambulance vehicles at the scene early on Saturday afternoon and had wondered what was the cause.
