Police bid to shut Leeds pub blighted by violence

Police want to call time at a Leeds pub with a record for violence and antisocial behaviour.

The Slip in, at Albion Street, Morley has been the location for many fights and incidents, where police have been called.

Now Morley Borough Independent Councillors Judith Elliott and Robert Finnigan are supporting an application from Morley neighbourhood policing team for a review of the licence for the Slip Inn.

The matter will be considered by Leeds City Council’s Licensing Committee in February, where a decision will be made on whether to withdraw the license completely, which would lead to the closure of the public house.

The request by West Yorkshire Police follows several incidents of anti-social behaviour, including brawling and physical assaults.

In December two men were arrested following an affray. In September police were called to a serious incident after a man outside received head injuries in a fight. He was taken to hospital by ambulance.

Coun Judith Elliott (Morley South) said: “The Slip Inn has been a location for great concerns for a considerable time. It has been the scene of severe antisocial behaviour and drinkers have been injured in fights and other physical assaults.

“We are supporting the police request to withdraw the licence from the Slip Inn as this type of behaviour will not be tolerated. It is our job to make Morley streets as safe as possible and to promote the town in a positive way.”

A series of assaults and fights has been reported at the pub over the years.

Coun Robert Finnigan, (Morley North) supported the Police move, said: “This public house blights the town centre and undermines Morley’s good reputation as a great and safe place to visit. We will fully support the Police in their efforts to eradicate this loutish and dangerous behaviour.”

A spokeswoman for West Yorkshire Police said the force was unable to comment as the matter was to be discussed at the next licensing committee.
