Plot hatched at Leeds bail hostel leads to new jail term

A burglar who teamed up with fellow criminals at a bail hostel before breaking into a house has been sent back to jail.

A court heard Jordan Rennison, 18, carried out the raid shortly after being released from a young offenders’ institution.

He was then placed in a bail hostel in the Woodhouse of Leeds and was “reacquainted” with criminals he had previously known.

Leeds Crown Court heard the four members were involved in a burglary at a house on Beechwood Terrace, Burley, Leeds, as three people living at the address were asleep upstairs around midnight on June 12.

They climbed in through an unlocked window before stealing credit cards, identity documents, electrical items and the keys to a Mini Cooper, which was parked outside.

They drove off in the vehicle which Rennison later crashed, causing £4,000 worth of damage. An off-duty police officer recognised Rennison as he fled.

Rennison, of Littlemoor Crescent, Pudsey, Leeds, was arrested the next day. He pleaded guilty to burglary and aggravated vehicle taking. The court heard Rennison has five previous convictions for burglary.

Michael Miller, mitigating, said Rennison committed the offence after being “reacquainted with like-minded individuals” who were at the hostel.

The Recorder of Leeds, Judge Peter Collier, jailed Rennison for three years. He told the teenager the sentence had to reflect the impact that high-burglary rates were having within the community in Burley.

He said: “You have a terrible track record for burglary. You have been committing them for many years. You appear to have learned nothing from the sentences you have received because you have learned nothing.”

Rennison was also banned from driving for 12 months.
