Plea from fan on Leeds United pub trawl

A Leeds United fan is appealing for help from Yorkshire Evening Post readers as she tries to trace the life and times of the Old Peacock pub.

Whites supporter Jan Zoontjens has spent the last few months looking into the story of the Peacock, which is situated opposite United’s Elland Road ground.

Jan has uncovered a wealth of information about the pub – but her investigations have now hit something of a brick wall.

And so she has turned to readers of the YEP in the hope they will be able to fill in the missing pieces of her Peacock jigsaw.

Jan said: “Any help people can give would be much appreciated.

“I’ve got plenty of detail – the names of all the licensees going back years, for example – but I’m sure there’s much more to find.

“I’d be particularly interested in hearing people’s quirky, off-the-wall stories and memories.

“I’ve read that, at one time, a man from a nearby tripe works used to bring in fresh tripe on Saturday lunchtimes that was put on the counter for anyone to share.

“Those kind of titbits give a really fascinating insight into what the pub was like in years gone by.

“I’m also keen to see any old photos people have of the Peacock and I want to find out more about the surrounding area so I can put its story in context.”

Jan is aiming to have her history project completed before the end of the current football season.

Once it is done and dusted, her findings are likely to be placed on the Leeds United Supporters’ Club website and could also make their way into print in pamphlet form.

The current Old Peacock opened in 1963, replacing an older pub of the same name whose history can be traced back to the 1840s.

A hugely-popular pre-match meeting spot for Whites fans, it has been run by the Leeds supporters’ club since 2007.

Anyone with information about the pub is asked to email: oldpeacock@yahoo.co.uk or ring Jan on 07963 106699 after 6pm Mondays to Thursdays or after 2pm on Fridays and Saturdays.

The other peacock was on the old road slightly further away from the ground. Long gone when the motorway system was built. As a boy I watched many a game from trees at the back of the present peacock. We could climb high enough to see the kop half of the pitch over the roof of the scratching shed. Heady days! Good luck with the project.

I would have thought the other paecock pub which is now long since demolished ,which was situated at the side of the ground would be just as interesting.Although it was very old it was called the NEW PEACOCK .At the time it seemed more popular than this one in question
