Plea for support for Fair Trade initiative

MAN ON A MISSION: Trainee Baptist minister Matt Wright, leading the push for Fair Trade in Horsforth

A CAMPAIGN is underway to persuade traders and shoppers in Horsforth to join a bid to have the town recognised as a Fair Trade community.

Leeds as a city has already been awarded Fair Trade status, but trainee Baptist minster Matt Wright is leading the bid for Horsforth to be recognised for its independent ethical stance - and he’s looking for businesses and individuals to pledge their support.

“It’s fantastic that we have already achieved two of the five set objectives in that we have the unanimous support of the town council and Horsforth Churches Together and that we have formed a steering group to take things forward,” said 29-year-old Mr Wright.

“However, the challenge set by Fair Trade is to be willing to dream bigger and better so now we need to start planning events, winning the support of the media and getting a critical mass of businesses behind us to help to make things happen.”

As well as shops stocking Fair Trade produce, Mr Wright is hoping to generate enough support to be able to run a stall at this year’s Horsforth Gala and to plan events similar to a craft fair held in Horsforth in March.

“If we can find people with a passion, then it has the potential to get bigger and bigger every year,” said Mr Wright.

“I recognise there may not be any immediate financial returns for those who do come forward but, going on my own experience, it can be a wonderful just knowing that you are helping others.

“There’s always a lot going on in Horsforth and it is a community with a great sense of pride. I just hope we can tap into that and make this work by finding people willing to offer their time and expertise.”

Anyone interested in being part of the Horsforth Fair Trade movement can contact Mr Wright by emailing matt@lhbc.org.uk.
