Proposals to slash the speed limit on a busy road in a Leeds market town have been welcomed.
Leeds City Council has started a formal consultation to reduce the speed limit on the built up section of Bradford Road, in Otley, from 40mph to 30mph.
The scheme is part of the local authority’s review of speed limits that are currently in place across the city.
The YEP understands that the lower speed limit on the busy stretch of road would compliment the introduction of a 20mph zone, which could be introduced on neighbouring residential streets in the market town.
Local councillor Colin Campbell welcomed the proposals for Bradford Road and said that residents were supportive of plans to cut the speed limit.
Coun Campbell (Lib Dem, Otley and Yeadon) said: “I am welcoming the council’s decision to move forward with this review by commencing a consultation on these plans.
“It is part of a wider strategy we are promoting to reduce speed limits in built up areas to reduce road accidents.”
Coun Campbell added: “Local residents are generally supportive of the proposed speed reduction, especially as there are also plans to introduce 20mph zones on the residential streets in Otley.”
