Pigeon Detectives and The Cribs launch charity singles

Indie rockers The Cribs and Leeds band The Pigeon Detectives are recording special tracks to raise money for neglected children in West Yorkshire.

The two groups have pledged their support for the Cash for Kids Action on Neglect Appeal to help youngsters across the county who sadly don't receive the love, care and protection they deserve.

The Pigeon Detectives, who are in Leeds writing their third album, will release a cover of Tainted Love.

Wakefield band The Cribs, who recently added legendary Smiths' guitarist Johnny Marr to their line up, have recorded their own version of Leeds group Kaiser Chiefs' track Modern Way.

Both songs will be released on iTunes as part of the appeal.

The Pigeon Detectives' lead singer Matt Bowman said: "We were sat at home listening to the radio as we do during our spare time.

"This Cash for Kids thing was being spoken about and it was Ryan (Wilson) who came up with the idea of doing a song ourselves."

Guitarist Ryan added: "We decided to be a Leeds band covering a Leeds song – Soft Cell didn't record the original, but they certainly made the song famous, they came up to Leeds and made it their own."

In Yorkshire and the Humber 1,370 children are the subject of a Child Protection Plan because of suspected neglect.

The lack of care these youngsters receive can range from not eating regular meals every day, spending little time with parents, family or carers, being smelly and dirty, or being clothed in dirty garments or clothes that are unsuitable for the weather.

96.3 Radio Aire's Cash for Kids charity has teamed up with Action for Children to raise 30,000 to help children suffering like this across Leeds and West Yorkshire.

That 30,000 could provide 600 neglected children with a coat, a jumper and a decent pair of shoes for this winter; or it could ensure around 165 youngsters receive a piece of fruit every day for a year; or it could provide some neglected kids with an amazing day out and the chance to make wonderful memories.

All proceeds from sales of the tracks will go directly to help neglected children in Leeds and West Yorkshire.

Both songs are available now.
