A pair of pickpockets is believed to be systematically targeting women using Leeds railway station.

British Transport Police (BTP) say the two men have been preying on female commuters, usually during the evening rush hour period when the station is busy, to steal mobile phones.

Detective Inspector Mick Jackson said: “We suspect the team may be responsible for a number of thefts at the station throughout May.”

The most recent recorded incident took place on Tuesday, May 27 when a 22-year-old woman from Leeds, boarded a train at about 5.30pm.

Det Insp Jackson said: “The platform was extremely busy and she remembers a man closely following behind her. A short while later she checked her bag and discovered her phone missing.

“After reviewing CCTV a man is captured reaching into the victim’s bag, stealing her phone then jumping off the train prior to the doors closing.

“The man was in the company of another man who we believe was acting as a lookout.

“Further investigations into two other offences in May show the same two men using the same approach to steal phones from two other woman boarding trains at the station.”

Officers have now issued CCTV images of two men they want to find.

“We would like to identify and speak to the men in these photographs in connection with this incident. If you recognise them or know their current whereabouts please contact us,” Det Insp Jackson added.

Anyone with information should contact British Transport Police on 0800 405040 or text 61016 or call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.

Last year BTP launched Operation Magnum, a crackdown on theft of passenger property on the railway network.

As part of the initiative, officers have issued video clips to help the travelling public spot the most common tricks thieves use.
