PDSA: Love for animals inspires Leeds team to awards victory

GREAT SERVICE: Volunteers at Bramley PDSA store.

They range in age from 18 to 82, but they share two very special passions - twin loves for animals and for volunteering.

Now the team from Bramley’s PDSA store - which raises money for the national vets’ charity - have scooped a national award for their dedication.

The 27-strong team, spanning three generations, was named ‘Retail Volunteer Team of the Year’ by the charity in its annual awards.

Bramley team member Judy Moore was also named ‘Key Volunteer of the Year’.

The Bramley volunteers beat colleagues from 170 PDSA stores across the UK to scoop the team title.

Store manager Sandra Sampson, who nominated both her team and Judy for the nationwide awards, said she was “over the moon” at their performance.

“It’s a double whammy for us and it’s great news for the store and all the volunteers,” she said.

“I’m really proud of them and it only goes to prove what a fantastic group of people they are. They are all from different backgrounds with different interests but they all share one thing in common: being passionate about raising money for sick and injured pets in the local area.

“I’ve never been surrounded by so many hardworking people. They are all thrilled at winning this award and it’s wonderful for them to be recognised for what they do for PDSA.”

Sandra reserved special praise for volunteer Judy, who is a ‘key’ volunteer for PDSA, meaning she completed specialist training to take on more responsibility in the store.

Judy volunteers every day, even Sunday, working on the till and assisting customers with their shopping - even helping elderly clients home with their purchases.

Sandra added: “Judy is absolutely fantastic and she thoroughly deserves her award. She’s always one of the first here in the morning and she’s so good with customers. Judy loves donating her time to PDSA. We have never met anyone like her.”

PDSA Head of Volunteering Janet Compton, who presented the team with their awards, said: “The volunteers at Bramley PDSA store have shown that they are incredibly dedicated. The team spirit is amazing and probably closer to that of a family than a retail store.”

PDSA, which provides free veterinary treatment to the sick and injured pets of people in need, has over 5,200 volunteers helping in its charity shops, pet hospitals and fundraising groups across the country.
